Tasting Notes from Winemaker Jac Cole

This crisp estate-bottled Chardonnay is fragrant with orange blossom, fresh pear and yellow apple. These beautiful fruit and floral elements are also apparent on the palate along with mineral notes, lemon curd and a suggestion of fresh brioche.

The Spring Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay Legacy

With the 2008 vintage, Spring Mountain Vineyard resumed production of estate bottled Chardonnay with limited case production (fewer than 100 cases) and sold only at the winery. The 2008 Chardonnay marked 35 vintages since the 1973 Spring Mountain Chardonnay bested Premier Cru and Grand Cru Burgundies in the now-famous Judgment of Paris tasting. The Paris tasting of 1976 rocked the wine world and brought Spring Mountain Vineyard wines into the limelight. In the ensuing decades, Spring Mountain ceased production of Chardonnay and focused on red Bordeaux blends, the flagship of which is Elivette.

The 2011 Chardonnay is the 4th winery-only release from SMV. We are currently increasing our Chardonnay plantings which will mean greater production going forward.

About Spring Mountain Vineyard

Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 850 acre estate on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain. Over 225 acres of the estate are planted to vine, representing 135 distinct hillside vineyard blocks with many soil types, exposures, and microclimates. Originally four individual 19th century Napa Valley vineyards, Miravalle, Alba, Chevalier and La Perla are now one vineyard producing primarily Bordeaux varieties. Because of the challenging and diverse hillsides, a substantial portion of the vineyard is planted in densities of over 4,000 vines per acre to the ancient gobelet form, a vertical training method invented in an earlier millennium by the Romans. The vineyard yields distinctive mountain wines noted for concentration, elegance and longevity. The quintessential wine from the estate is Elivette.
